In March 1973, three years after the 350 SL, Mercedes diversified the R107 roadsters. If the American market has had a 4.5-liter V8 engine in the 350 SL for ecological reasons since 1972, Europe has finally reached an equivalent displacement, for greater power. The American engine with low compression ratio delivers only 193 hp while the European version obtains 225. The idea is to counter the Jaguar E-Type III series and its V12 or the future XJ-S, also endowed with a V12. The big V8 is necessarily associated with a 3-speed automatic gearbox, which removes any inclination to attack with a knife between the teeth. It's an American-style roadster, for driving at very reasonable speeds with your hair blowing in the wind, and for pressing very hard on the accelerator in a straight line while enjoying breathtaking times in the splendid rumble of a V8. But no sportiness, the running gear is too narrow and the guidance is not their best quality. The weight is also a deterrent. The comfort and flexibility of the suspensions will be praised more. We note in this case that the equipment and the quality of fit are irreproachable, a sign that the emphasis has been placed on comfort. Thirty years later, the furniture is neither tired nor worn out. Certainly, it lacks fantasy, but what nobility! Black plastics don't swear around wood. The steering wheel looks huge, but it is harmonious in proportion to the instrumentation. It's simple, it's functional, it's crystal clear. The 4.5 liter engine was modified in 1975 and only provided 217 hp due to a change in electronic injection model. The torque loses a little, but the remaining 36.7 mkg of torque is expressed at a lower speed. The model did not change for years while the 450 SLC received a 5.0 liter engine. This engine was then installed in the roadster in 1980, and the 450 SL and SLC gave way to the 500 SL and 500 SLC while the 350 SL became 380 SL. The small 280 SL continued its way until 1985. In September of this year, its 6-cylinder was replaced by a 3-liter and it therefore became 300 SL, while the 380 SL became 420 SL. In the USA, a 560 SL tops the range while the 500 SL remains the spearhead in Europe. With its greedy V8, 26 HP, maintenance at Mercedes price, tire fitting which is rare and therefore very expensive (around € 500 per tire at Michelin!), The prices of the 450 SL are still quite reasonable. They can be found for less than € 20,000 in very good condition. Note the AMG version of the 560 SL 6.0 liters by Michael Schumacher (3 copies worldwide). It should also be noted that the model presented has double round headlights intended to comply with American standards and which add an additional charm.
